Question by Jenifer: Why does insurance cover so little days for drug rehab?
My husband was just admitted to Sunrise House in Lafayette,Nj. This is his first time in rehab. It is a 28 days program but the people who work there tell me we will get lucky if they let him stay for 10 days. Why do they do this?
ok, honeslty, everyone is being a little judgmental. Addiction is a disease and people need help for it. I was just wondering if any has been in a simular situation and could give me any insight.

Because drug addiction is not a MEDICAL issue, like having cancer or a back injury.

Listen takito burrito, inhaling a subbstance that makes you feel the need for more of it is NOT a MEDICAL ISSUE. Its someone being a complete dumb ass and expects everyone else to feel sorry for him and fix it for him.
He needs to take responsibility for his actions and quit trying to scam insurance companies.
Pixie you’re a moron. Addiction IS IN FACT a medical issue. The reason why they do that is because they get more money out of you this way. He gets out then they hope in a few months he will be back in so they can increase your payment. Insurance is good to have but someone really needs to fix it because as it is now it’s run by corrupt people.

I dont believe there is a good answer for that question, i also struggled with that issue, my insurance covers $ 1000 lifetime for these types of things and that adds up 2 about 10 days. There are some places that are non-profit and the state will “pick up the tab”. Look into a different facility, i know the Gateway facilities in my area are free. 30-90 day programs. Good Luck
they do not consider addiction a “medical” issue. They consider it a “mental health” issue and they have limits on how much they will pay in a year for mental health coverage. Janary 1, 2010 Mental health parity went into effect and they cannot limit the amount covered but they can exclude mental health coverage all together… all depends on which policy his employer buys. So they either get kicked out the facility when the money runs out or have to pay for it all themselves. Even if you do have mental health coverage the insurance company can make decisions abotu how much care is needed…. if they have studies that show that the most benefit is received in the first 7 days and the remaining 23 days is just reinforcing what they got the first 7 days or that they latter 23 days has teh same treatment that they can get put patient, they can say “Hey, we feel that he could benefit just as much from out patient treatment now so we will not pay for inpatient treatment anymore”. Insurance companies may be harsh but they do have to have limits somewhere…. The cost of healthcare is not due to the rising cost of insurance… the rising cost of insurance is due to the rising cost of healthcare….. and the insurance company is perfectly within their right to say.. “Hey, this $ 10,000 treatment has been proven to be just as effective as the $ 50,000 treatment you want… we will pay for the $ 10,000 treatment and if you want the expensive one you can pay for it yourself”. So.. mostly they will cover inpatient long enough for the worst of the physical withdrawal symptoms have passed then boot them to out patient rehab.
